Over the past five years I have experimented with many different types of student projects to add variety and value to the work done in class by my students. Because of my marketing and advertising experience, I lean towards activities that utilize technology and that teach students skills they can use in high school, college and the business world.
In addition, I subscribe to John Dewey's theory that
students learn only when they have a "felt need." John Dewey, in case you don't know, was the father of the modern American Education System. To that end, I endeavor to create projects that have utility and a high degree of independent learning attached to them.
There is no question that my students become true scholars when they are conducting research in the library and working on their Research Papers and Projects. You can actually see students become excited about their learning during this process. In addition, many students beco
me managers, in every sense of that word, when they are chosen by their peers to be their Team Leader.
The value for students, when they are executing a well thought out project is measurable in many different ways. On this page are only a few samples of that output. The reward for me, observing my students enjoying themselves while mastering new academic and life skills, is a joy that few people will ever know. It is truly one of the blessings of being a teacher.
